The Modern Business School: Prof. Peter Lorange, President IMD
He gave a very thoughtful presentation on the developments in the fields of business education and business schools. Summarizing some of the developments:
- Of the four segments of management education, MBA, PhD, Undergraduate and Executive Education, the latter as the segment with the highest growth and consequently the segment, which will shape the future of many business schools. Peter highlighted the trend in the nature of academic value-creation, moving away from the traditional one-way academic lecturing and the hypothesis-testing characteristic of academic towards the participative way of learning and incremental research, which has to be brought to the classroom faster than before. Following this analysis he went on to expose his ideas about the changes required and the way to implement them.
- The resulting strategy of IMD is based on four pillars, which is resulting in healthy financial situation.
* Real world-real learning * The global meeting place * All learning is lifelong learning * A simple, internal-learning partner- organizational structure and processes
The Future of Management Education, Prof Jerry Wind, Wharton
He discussed four topics in his presentation by videoconference: * The widening chasm between business schools and the needs of their customers * A new management education paradigm * Ways for business schools to re-invent them selves and meet the new challenges * Implement-able action plans
Interpreting China as a Teaching Phenomenon Prof. Bill Fischer, IMD
After a very interesting introduction on the rise of China, he went on to talk about the way to get the subject in the classrooms. He showed some interesting examples of his methods and he asked the participants to fill out a questionnaire about their view on the developments in China and about its future.
Award Ceremony
During the lunch, mirroring the high quality of the IMD, Prof. Pedro Nueno handed over the IAM award 2007 to Peter Lorange. In his speech he highlighted the many contributions of Peter to Management Education over such a long period of time as well as the versatility of his personality being a successful academic, a “perfect” Dean of the IMD and a successful entrepreneur.
Conclusions and remarks by the Chancellor
All participants were upbeat on the meeting, its content, the lively discussions and the ambience. This gave raise to various comments on the IAM and it’s functioning: * How do we get more fellows to attend the yearly meetings? * All speakers called upon the capacity of the membership to help them with the topics raised, as did Jerry Wind also already in the previous meeting. The latter without any significant results. * How do get more members; a goal of 300, now some 250, has been mentioned.
The Chancellor took it upon him to address these questions in the meetings with the Vice-Chancellors and he invited the members to come forward with suggestions and ideas.
